Base Camp Masai Mara, also known as Base Camp Mara, is one of the only camps in the Masai Mara that is co-run with the local community, ensuring every guest contributes to the local livelihoods in real time, where you get the chance to interact with real warriors, mothers, artisans, guides, and elders.
In this guide, Africa Holiday Safaris will help you understand in depth why spending your stay in Base Camp Masai Mara is the best decision you will ever make.

The History Of Base Camp Mara
Base Camp Masai Mara, a moderately sized tented camp, was founded in 1998 by Svein Wilhelmsen, and it began as an eco-camp to provide direct benefits to the Masai community, proving that tourism can be sustainable.
Moreover, instead of building a luxury lodge, the founders also envisioned something unique where the camp would blend with the ecosystem but not against it.
Immediately, the Masai Mara stood out, creating a perfect blend between nature and heritage.
Did you know that its establishment partnered with the Masai Chief Ole Taek, who shared concerns about the environmental, social, and economic threats to his people and the ecosystem?
In the early 2000s, when the world was still adapting to eco-tourism, Base Camp Mara had already started embracing eco-tourism through:
- Adopted Solar Power
- Implemented strict waste Management
- Protected a significant stretch of the Talek River
These efforts did not go unnoticed, but started getting recognition as one of Kenya’s Sustainable properties.
Location
Base Camp Masai Mara is located along the Talek River, right on the eastern side of the Masai Mara National Reserve in Narok County, Kenya, placing it as one of the most wildlife-rich and most accessible in the entire Mara.
This prime riverfront location of the Base Camp Masai Mara allows travellers to experience uninterrupted views of the wildlife coming to drink at the Talek River, while you also enjoy the shade and the natural tranquillity provided by the indigenous trees that surround the camp.
Accessiblity
Travelling to Base Camp Masai Mara is an adventure in itself. It is smooth, exciting and sets the tone for an unforgettable safari travel experience.
By Road
The journey begins from the city of Nairobi, roughly 270 KM, taking 5-6 hours depending on stops and traffic. For instance, you can stop at the Great Rift Valley View Point in Naivasha as you appreciate the escarpments and even create memories that last a lifetime by taking photos and selfies.
In addition, you will pass through small villages where people wave at you. How impressive to feel loved and appreciated.
Later, as you approach the Mara, the scenery changes to a golden savannah dotted with acacia trees, while wildlife spotting often happens even before you enter the Masai Mara National Reserve, where you will see Giraffes browsing, Elephants walking majestically or even warthogs darting across the roads, making the road trip memorable to your Base Camp Kenya Masai Mara experience.
Therefore, for families, groups or budget-conscious travellers, travelling by road provides flexibility and a scenic introduction to the Masai Mara before even getting to Base Camp adventure in the Masai Mara.
By Air
Travelling to Base Camp Masai Mara by air gives a totally different experience compared to travelling by road.
First, you will depart from Wilson Airport, Nairobi, to Olkiombo Airstrip in the Masai Mara, which takes about 45 minutes with a short 20-minute transfer to Base Camp Mara.
However, flight costs do differ depending on the airline and the season, and it is a one-way ticket or a two-way ticket?
Even though travelling by air is pricier than going by road, flying saves time, providing amazing aerial views of the Mara.
This kind of travelling is perfect for honeymooners or solo travellers who are looking forward to giving themselves a luxurious travel experience for their birthday, despite the high cost.
Accomodation
Let me tell you about my stay at the Base Camp Masai Mara.
At the beginning of 2025, I had written down on a vision board that before the end of 2025, I would want to have the best safari experience at the Masai Mara and with the help of Africa Holiday Safaris, they helped me find the best place for my stay, and they offered me the Base Camp Masai Mara.
Manifestation really works, and my stay at Base Camp Masai Mara gave me exactly that.
When I arrived at the Base Camp Masai Mara, it was exactly as I had imagined.
The moment I reached there, I was welcomed warmly by the staff with cold towels and refreshing Kenyan drinks, and I chose a cold glass of bubbly champagne.
It was so thoughtful that it made me feel valued, appreciated and above all at home.
The staff members were very attentive, keen and detailed, making sure they gave me the best of Base Camp Mara, made of only 6 tents, to be specific, Saruni Base Camp.
They helped me carry my suitcases and bags to my tent as I appreciated the beauty. I felt cared for.
Here is where it gets better: my luxury camp was spacious, elegant, and inviting.
The bed was perfectly comfortable, talk about the linen white beddings, with a welcome of red roses over the place written “ Welcome Home”.
First things first, after travelling and getting to the camp, I always prefer having a cold shower and freshening up even before dinner. The ensuite bathroom felt like a slice of luxury in the wilderness.
During my stay, I had also hoped for authenticity, not just comfort. I wanted to be part of the Mara, and Base Camp gave me exactly that.
Each tent, from the standard ones to the family tents, is perfectly designed so that you can feel immersed in the Masai Mara.
I could feel birds chirping, feel the breeze, and even spot elephants from a distance. I never felt like leaving.

Before coming, I had done my research about Base Camp Mara rates, and I knew they vary depending on the season.
For instance, during the lower season, rates often start around $249 per night, while during the peak season, they go up to around $399 per night.
I remember thinking Will it be worth it? But after experiencing the Base Camp Mara, it was worth every coin.

Best Activities to Experience At Base Camp Masai Mara
One thing I enjoyed about staying at the Base Camp Mara is that every day, something new unfolded that made me feel alive.
Here is what made my stay unforgettable:
- Safari Experience
Base Camp Masai Mara ensured my days always started early with a soft knock on my tent and a warm cup of tea, followed by a gentle good morning.
Then, after around 20 minutes, I stepped out only to see a 4-wheel vehicle waiting for me that immediately showed I was going for a morning game drive, and I needed to be in my safari attire, and yes, I was in my cute safari attire, ready to blend and connect with nature.
Do you know what you wear really matters when going on a safari?
This is because bright colours and patterns distract wild animals, and you may end up not seeing any.
Therefore, it is advisable to camouflage with the environment while wearing safari colours, which are beige and green.
One thing about the Masai Mara is that the wildlife does not make you wait.
I got a chance to witness Cheetahs on the hunt, and it was so beautiful that it left me breathless.

- Hot Air Balloon Experience
I have always believed that some moments in life last for a lifetime, and my Hot Air Balloon experience at Base Camp was one of them.
I was picked up from the camp before sunset, wrapped up in my Masai Shuka while at the same time feeling that mix of excitement that only the wild can give.
The Launch
When you arrive at the launch site, the first thing you see is the balloon slowly inflating and a giant colourful dome rising with each burst of flame.
A few minutes later, the balloon was ready to kick off, and the pilot gives a signal.
At first, I was very hesitant with anxiety all over me, but the risk-taker that I am, I gave it a try, and I got into the basket, my heart pounding, and within no time, I was floating.
The Experience
This was the best experience of my life, seeing the Mara from the sky felt unreal. I could see the meandering Mara River, dotted with Hippos, Giraffes moving like Shadows, Elephant families matching and I was also lucky to see lions.
Interestingly, during the Great Migration, the views became unbelievable. Watching thousands of wildebeests crossing the Mara River to the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, looked beautiful.
Safety Precautions
I can assure you, the Hot Air Balloon in the Masai Mara is remarkably safe. Do not hesitate to give it a shot, and thank me later.
Some of the safety precautions when experiencing the Hot Air Balloon include:
- Pre-briefing by an experienced and licensed pilot.
- Safe landing techniques
- Weighing Balancing
- Be calm and confident
- Live the moment
If you are looking forward to having the best experience as I did, Base Camp Mara partners with the best tour operators in the Masai Mara, like Africa Holiday Safaris, ensuring you get the best experience.

- Cultural Experiences
I remember vividly one afternoon, when I was picked up for a village visit. As we drove, the driver started sharing stories about the Masai traditions and how they co-exist with the Mara ecosystem. Good thing, before we even arrived at the village, I felt prepared, and it was time to experience it in real life.
We are used to the Western culture kind of life back in Nairobi, and this time I saw it differently.
You say you hate attention, here you will experience it, you like it or not. Women greeted me with smiles on their faces as they showed me beadwork and traditional jewellery, and explained how each colour has a specific meaning.
Interestingly, tall men and boys demonstrated traditional jumping dances known as the Adumu in Masai. I did not hesitate to join the dances, which made me feel Part of their world.
If you would like to get a glimpse of the Masai Culture, the Mara is the place to be.

Did you know that Base Camp Masai Mara works closely with the Masai to ensure that cultural visits are respectful, educational and beneficial to the community?
This involves:
- Buying crafts
- Listening to stories around a bonfire from elders, where you learn more about the Masai Culture.
- Participating in dances directly.
Are you a wildlife lover or a bird watcher?
To be honest, I do not encourage you to skip the cultural visits. This cultural experience leaves you in awe!
- Sundowner At the Talek River
Evenings were the best part of my trip. Sitting at the Talek River with a cold drink in my hand as I watched the sky turn orange pink, it felt like the Mara was putting on a show just for me.
It felt so therapeutic and relaxing that it made me calm down my mind and soul, saying to myself, “ God is very creative”.
Typically, the experience takes place after your afternoon game drive, and the guides will select the perfect spot for you to relax and reflect on your safari experience.
Why the Talek River?
The Talek River is a prime location for sundowners due to its abundance of wildlife, such as hippos, which provides a natural soundtrack to the evening.
Additionally, the location offers exceptional photo-taking opportunities, with the stunning sunset as a backdrop.

- Bird Watching
Ever in my life have I ever thought I would enjoy birdwatching, till I came to Base Camp Masai Mara.
As I was seated on my private veranda, relaxing as I read my favourite novel by Kuki Gallmann called Dreamed of Africa, I spotted varieties of birds like the Lilac-breasted Roller and many others that made me stay there for hours.
Wow! I just fell in love with bird watching immediately.
Let me promise you, the next time I am visiting Base Camp Masai Mara, I am coming well prepared with my bird guidebook, binoculars, and camera, capturing each of them.

- Learning About Conservation
As my trip came to an end, I really loved learning about how Base Camp Masai Mara’s conservation work.
Base Camp Mara is not one of those lodges that teach about sustainability; you actually see it once you get there.
I vividly remember my guide mentioning to me, “Here we do not just host guests, we protect the future”.
Those words stayed with me the entire trip at Base Camp Masai Mara, where even the small details were lessons like:
- Plastic bottles are not allowed at the camp
- Availability of solar-heated showers
- Usage of locally-sourced ingredients
- Availability of waste management systems
I was so proud of myself that my stay was not harming the environment, but I was conserving the environment to the letter.
