Your Detailed 7 Days Rwanda Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in the Land of a Thousand Hills – Kigali

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport (KGL), after collecting your luggage and clearing customs, you will be warmly welcomed by an Africa Holiday Safaris representative. You will be transferred to your comfortable guest house to settle in. Depending on your arrival time, the remainder of the day is at your leisure to relax and acclimatize. Should you wish to explore, we can arrange a guided tour of a local art gallery or vibrant market. Please note, meals on this day are at your own expense, allowing you flexibility; we can happily assist with restaurant recommendations and bookings.

Day 2: Journey to the Eastern Plains – Akagera National Park

Following an early start, we depart east on a scenic drive to Akagera National Park. A delicious packed breakfast will be provided for you to enjoy en route. Upon arrival, you will check into the luxurious Magashi Camp, your exclusive home for the next three nights. After relaxing, you will embark on your first afternoon game activity. Everything about Magashi is a thrilling quest: watch elephants submerge themselves in the lake’s waters, try your hand at catch-and-release fishing, and in the evening, listen to the stories of the land during a traditional Kugisha supper around a roaring fire.

Day 3 & 4: Full Immersion in Akagera’s Wilderness

The next two days are dedicated to fully exploring the diverse landscapes of Akagera. Gear up for thrilling morning and afternoon game drives where every moment is filled with anticipation. A wildlife sighting is always unpredictable; you will learn to look for tracks, listen for the alarm calls of birds, and keep a sharp eye out for nearby predators. In this reborn wilderness, you will search for lions, giraffes, zebra, and the critically endangered black rhino. One afternoon will be dedicated to a tranquil boating safari on Lake Ihema, offering a different perspective of the abundant birdlife, resident hippo pods, and enormous crocodiles.

Day 5: Across the Country to the Volcanoes

After a final morning activity and breakfast in Akagera, you will begin the journey across the country. This is a long but beautiful day of driving through Rwanda’s wonderful countryside, offering a true sense of the nation’s stunning topography. You will stop for lunch in Kigali before continuing northwest, ascending into the mountainous region that is home to the gorillas. You will arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon with time to freshen up and marvel at the breathtaking volcanic views before dinner. For ultimate comfort and speed, a scenic helicopter transfer can be arranged at an additional cost, weather permitting.

Day 6: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Today is the day. Following an early breakfast, you will proceed to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a detailed briefing from the park rangers. Once assigned to your gorilla family group, your trek begins. You’ll walk through the dense, mystical tropical rainforest in search of these magnificent creatures. The trek can be challenging, but the reward is immeasurable. You may find the gorillas going about their daily chores: feeding on bamboo shoots, grooming each other, or watching youngsters tumble and play. You will have one precious hour in their presence, a truly humbling and unforgettable experience. Afterwards, you will return to the headquarters and transfer back to your lodge for a late lunch and a well-deserved afternoon of rest and reflection.

Day 7: Reflection and Departure from Kigali

After a final breakfast at the lodge, you will check out and be transferred by road back to Kigali. Before heading to the airport, you will have an orientation tour of the city, including a poignant and essential visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial to pay homage to the nation’s past. This experience provides powerful context for the incredible story of Rwanda’s reconciliation and progress. Afterwards, you will be transferred to the airport for your international departure.
