5 Days Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe National Park

The 5 Days Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe National Park Safari takes you  to Nyungwe Forest National Park in Rwanda. The major highlights of this tour is trekking chimpanzees in Nyungwe forest, and the Nyungwe canopy walkway.

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

Arrive at Kigali airport and a short city tour to Camp Kigali; where 10 Belgian soldiers were killed a day after the genocide killings began in 1994. You will also get to visit other sites such as; Kigali Genocide Memorial, Caplaki Craft Village, Kimironko Market, Presidential Palace Museum among others.Later transfer to your hotel for an overnight stay and dinner.

Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe

After an early morning breakfast, your guide will pick you from your hotel and drive 268km to Nyungwe Forest National Park. This journey takes about 4-6 hours’ drive and will take you through the beautiful and terraced rolling hills of Rwanda. You will have a stopover in Butare and pay a visit to the ethnographic national museum, Nyanza and Murambi genocide memorial sites as well as the King’s palace in Nyanza.

Day 3:  Chimpanzee trekking

Have an early breakfast and then head to the Park’s headquarters in Uwinka where you will be briefed by the park’s head ranger and placed in trekking groups of 8 members per group. Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe forest national park begins at exactly 8am, so endeavor to keep time and make sure you are at the Uwinka center by 7am.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is home to approximately 80 habituated chimpanzees. While tracking chimps in the forest, you might as well spot other primate species such as; the black and white colobus monkey, red-tailed monkey, golden monkey and other monkey species. You will have your packed lunch after your chimp trekking activity or return to your hotel for lunch and good rest.

Later in the evening, you can opt to go on a cultural encounter to one of the nearby villages. While there, you will get to learn more about the Rwandan culture, interact with the local people, get to see their daily lifestyles and even enjoy performances from the local dance groups.

Day 4:Canopy Walkway

Wake up early in the morning, have your breakfast and head back to the park’s headquarters at Uwinka Centre. This is where you will being your hiking trip, which will lead you to the Canopy Walkway. Nyungwe’s canopy walkway is 90 meters long and 50 meters above the ground. While on the canopy walkway, you will get a good look of the forest from a bird’s eye view and also get to experience the adrelin- charged 200m long series of walkways in the forest canopy.Later in the evening, you can head to Gisakura Tea estate. Here, you will be taken through the process of tea growing, harvesting, processing and packaging. You will even get to taste the delicious taste of the final product.Return back to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 5:Transfer back to Kigali.

Start your day with a relaxed breakfast and later set off for Kigali city. Your guide will drop you at your hotel in the city or drive you straight to Kigali International Airport. However, if you still have enough time, you would opt to have a brief tour of Kigali City.
